Blues Quake Class Levels
Levels are not based on how many years you have been dancing or how many lessons you have taken or are currently taking. Everyone learns at a different speed and in different ways. Levels at BluesQuake are self-assessed. Note that, while we have no formal auditions, instructors have the authority to suggest a level change.
Your level is determined by the extent of your knowledge and skill based on the criteria below:
Your level is determined by the extent of your knowledge and skill based on the criteria below:
All Level:
“All Levels” classes are intended to contribute to your dance in fun and creative ways. These classes will address general concepts that every dancer should learn and will be interesting for dancers at all levels.
Beginner / Improver:
A “beginner” already has social dance experience and has taken a few beginning blues classes. Dancers in this track will know fundamentals such as keeping a consistent pulse, walking/traveling, and basic turns and be able to execute these in time with the music. This track will help improve the technique behind the fundamentals and the lead/follow connection.
Intermediate:
An “intermediate” dancer implements concepts such as following/leading from the body/core, dancing behind the beat as well as to subdivided rhythms, and accommodating for elasticity in various frames. A qualified individual knows some historical blues movement, feels comfortable with solo movement, should be an active social dancer, and is starting to learn musicality and improvisation.
Note: If you are unsure about any of the above, please select the Beginner / Improver level.

Advanced:
An “advanced” dancer works on improvement in their dance on a regular basis through practicing solo or with a group. A qualified individual has taken workshops before at a similar level and may have started competing or may be an accomplished competitor. At the advanced level, dancers should be familiar with vernacular blues and jazz movement, frame matching, shared and off-axis turns, and ability the to create rhythm and pulse throughout the body. At this level, self-criticism is an important asset. If students are committed to learning, and fulfill the previous criteria, the advanced level will challenge them to take their dance up a notch. Content focuses more on technique and teaching is fast-paced.
